1.In Kansas City, Missouri, a computer helps firefighters. The computer contains information about every one of the 350,000 street addresses in the city. When fire-fighters answer a call, the computer will give them important information about the burning building: its position, size, type and so on. In "fact, the computer system has almost unlimited ways of helping fire-fighters with the problems facing them. For instance, it can give medical information about invalid living in a burning building. (76) With this information, the fire-fighters can take special care to these sick persons and remove them quickly and safely.
The Kansas City computer system also keeps a medical record of each of the city"s 900 fire-fighters. This kind of information is especially useful when a fireman is injured. With this medical information, doctors at the hospital can treat the injured fire-fighters more quickly and easily.
The fire-fighters themselves greatly appreciate the computer help. They know about possible dangers ahead of them and can prepare for them. Many times the computer information helps to save lives and property. Sometimes the lives are those of firefighters themselves!

7.During the rest of sleep, the fatigue of the body disappears. The tired mind gathers new energy; the memory improves; and problems are seen in better perspective (观点).
Some adults require little sleep; others need eight to ten hours in every twenty-four. Infants sleep sixteen to eighteen hours daily, the amount gradually going less as they grow older. Young students may need twelve hours; university students may need ten. A worker with a physically demanding job may also need ten, whereas an executive working under pressure may manage on six to eight. Many famous people are repute to have required little sleep. Napoleon Bonaparte, Thomas Edison, and Charles Darwin apparently averaged only four to six hours a night.
  (77) Whatever your individual need, you can be sure that by the age of thirty you will have slept for a total of more than twelve years. By that age you will also have developed a sleep routine; a favorite hour, a favorite bed, a favorite posture (姿势), and a formula (程式) you need to follow in order to rest comfortably.
(78)Investigators have tried to find out how long a person can go without sleep. Several people have reached more than 115 hours nearly five days. Whatever the limit, it is absolute. Animals kept awake for from five to eight days have died of exhaustion. The limit for human beings is probably about a week.

The writer implies that ______.

13.(79) In recent years many countries of the world have been faced with the problem of how to make their workers more productive. Some experts claim the answer is to make jobs more varied (多种多样的). But do more varied jobs lead to greater productivity? The evidence shows that while variety certainly makes the worker"s life more enjoyable, it does not actually make him work harder. As far as increasing productivity is concerned, then, variety is not an important factor..
  (80) Other experts feel that giving the worker freedom to do his job in his own way is important. There is no doubt that this is true. The problem is that this kind of freedom cannot easily be given in the modem factory with its complicated machinery which must be used in a fixed way. Thus, although freedom of choice may be important, usually very little can be done to create it.
Another important consideration is how much a worker contributes to the product he is making. In most factories the worker sees only one small part of the product. Some car factories are now experimenting with having many small production lines rather than a large one, so that each worker contributes more to the production of the cars on his line. It would seem that not only is degree of the worker"s contribution an important factor, therefore, it is also one we can do something about. To what extent does more money lead to greater productivity? The workers themselves certainly think this is important. But perhaps they want more money only because the work they do is so boring. Money just lets them enjoy their spare time more. A similar argument may explain demands for shorter working hours. Perhaps if we make their jobs more interesting, they will want neither more money nor shorter working hours.

Varied jobs, in writer"s opinion, will ______.

A.offer greater productivity
B.drive workers to work harder
C.make workers more productive
D.make worker"s life more enjoyable, but do not make them more hardworking

14.
