Long ago, in days of the Roman Empire, people used to believe a god of farming called

“Saturn”. They believed that Saturn could make the weather good or bad, and that he had the power to control how much rain would fall.

Before a Roman farmer would plant his fields, he would try to get Saturn to give him good weather. He believed that if he killed an animal for Saturn, he would make Saturn happy. Then Saturn would make sure that the weather was good.

Not only did the people name a planet after Saturn but they also name a day of the week after him. They called this day “Saturn dies”, Latin words which mean “day of Saturn”. In English those words became Saturday.

Sir Elton John, the famous singer, got married to his long-time partner in a civil marriag

e ceremony held in Windsor Guildhall on 21st December 2005. Nothing special about that, you might say, until you discover that Sir Elton's marriage partner is a man.

Fifteen days previously the law in England and Wales had changed to allow civil partnerships to take place between people of the same sex. Fifteen days elapsed between the law coming into force and the first "gay marriages" being performed as the couple has to declare publicly, in writing, their intent to marry, at least, two weeks before the ceremony takes place.

A civil partnership in England and Wales is a legally recognized partnership between two people of the same sex which grants the participants new legal status as far as employment, pensions and inheritances are concerned. The partners in the arrangement become next of kin to each other, as in a heterosexual (异性的) marriage. The new law also alters the civil partners' rights in relation to immigration and nationality. Nevertheless, the partnership is not legally the same as a marriage, according to UK law. This is partly due to the fact that the ceremony itself does net need to be conducted in public and the participants do not need to be present together at the same time to sign the necessary documents. Hence the terms "gay marriage" and "gay wedding" have no legal meaning although some couples choose to use them.

Many European countries have introduced legislation to officially recognize same-sex partnerships. Britain is only the latest in quite a long line of countries to allow "gay weddings". As long ago as 1989, Denmark became the first country to give same-sex partners the same rights as married couples.

Outside Europe "gay marriages" have been allowed across Canada since July 2005, in Argentina since 2003, and in New Zealand since the end of 2004. "Gay marriages" are permitted in some states in the USA, for example, Massachusetts. Vermont was the first to permit them, giving same-sex partners the chance to make civil unions in 2000. In California, however, an attempt to legalize same-sex partnerships was stopped by the State Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

There was a time, not that long ago, when women Were considered smart if they played dumb

to get a man, and women who went to college were more interested in getting a "Mrs.degree" than a bachelor's. Even today, it's not unusual for a woman to get whispered and unrequested counsel from her grandmother that an advanced degree could hurt her in the marriage market.

"There were so many misperceptions out there about education and marriage that I decided to sort out the facts," said economist Betsey Stevenson, an assistant professor at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. So along with Wharton colleague Adam Isen, Stevenson calculated national marriage data from 1950 to 2008 and found that the marriage penalty women once paid for being well educated has largely disappeared.

"In other words, the difference in marriage rates between those with college degrees and those without is very small," said Stephanie Coontz, a family historian at Evergreen State College. The new analysis also found that while high-school dropouts(辍学学生) had the highest marriage rates in the 1950s, today college-educated women are much more likely to marry than those who don't finish high school.

Of course, expectations have changed dramatically in the last half century. "In the 1950s, a lot of women thought they needed to marry right away," Coontz said. "Real wages were rising so quickly that men in their 20s could afford to marry early. But they didn't want a woman who was their equal. Men needed and wanted someone who knew less." In fact, she said, research published in 1946 documented that 40 percent of college women admitted to playing dumb on dates. "These days, few women feel the need to play down their intelligence or achievements," Coontz said.

The new research has more good news for college grads. Stevenson said the data indicate that modern college-educated women are more likely to be married before age 40, are less likely to divorce, and are more likely to describe their marriages as "happy". The marriages of well-educated women tend to be more stable because the brides are usually older as well as wiser, Stevenson said.
