Everybody has one, and yours will help determine the limits of success, happiness, and

fulfillment in your life. We’re talking about personality; it is no exaggeration to state that your personality is one of your most important assets. It has already helped shape your life and will continue to do so in the future. All you have achieved thus far, all you expect to achieve in your career, whether you will be a good spouse or parent, and even your general state of health can be influenced by your personality and the personalities of the people with whom you interact. Your personality can limit or expand your options and choices in life. It can prevent you from sharing certain experiences with other people or enable you to make the most of them. It can restrict and constrain some people and open the world of experience to others. How often have you described someone as having a terrific personality? By that you typically mean the person is affable and pleasant. You might select this kind of person for a friend, roommate, or colleague at work. If you are a manager, you might choose to hire this person. If you are ready to make a commitment to a personal relationship, you might want to marry this person, basing your decision on your perception of his or her personality. You have also known people you would describe as having a terrible personality. Such persons may be aloof, hostile, aggressive, unfriendly, unpleasant, or difficult to get along with. You would not hire them or want to associate with them, and they may be similarly rejected, and isolated by others. While you are making judgments about the personalities of other people, they are making similar judgments about you. These mutual decisions that shape the lives of both the judged and the judges are made countless times, every time we encounter a social situation that requires us to interact with new people. Of course, the number and variety of social situations you willingly participate in are also determined by your personality, for example, your relative sociability or shyness.

If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they become weak; when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows this, and nobody would think of questioning this fact. Yet there are many people who do not seem to know that the memory works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly, either consciously or unconsciously. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough opportunity to become strong. The position is exactly the same as that of two persons, one of whom exercises his arms and legs by playing tennis, while the other sits in a chair or a motorcar all day.

If a friend complains that his arms are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to be blamed, or that he is just unlucky, and few of us realize that it is just as much his own fault. Not all of us can become extremely strong or extremely clever; but all of us can, if we have ordinary bodies and brains, improve our strength and our memory by the same means——practice.

Have you ever noticed that people who cannot read or write usually have better memories than those who can? Why is this? Of course, because those who cannot read or write have to remember things; they cannot write them down in a little notebook. They have to remember dates, times and prices, names, songs and stories; so their memory is the whole time being exercised.

So if you want a good memory, learn from the poor and humble: practice remembering.

6. Which of the following is true, according to the first paragraph?()

A、It is a fact that some people do not use their arms or legs.

B、To have a good memory, one has to exercise it regularly.

C、Everybody knows that memory of words is the same way as the arms or legs.

D、To keep fit, one should not sit in a chair or a motorcar.

7. In the author's opinion, poor memory results from().

A、poor health

B、lack of remembering practice

C、unlucky fortune

D、insufficient education

8. The author seems to advice us().

A、to play tennis to improve our memory

B、to complain about nothing but our health

C、to blame ourselves rather than our parents for the poor memory

D、to learn from those who cannot read or write

9. The author comes to the conclusion that().

A、the poorer one is, the better his memory

B、memory can be improved by practicing it

C、the poor and humble people may help you remember things

D、if you want a good memory, do not read or write anything

10. Which of the following may best serve as the title of the article?()

A、Poor and Good Memory.

B、How to Improve Your Memory.

C、Your Arms, Legs and Brain.

D、Learn from the Poor and Humble.

Public goods are those commodities from whose enjoyment nobody can be effectively excluded
. Everybody is free to enjoy the benefits of these commodities, and one person' s utilization does not reduce the possibilities of anybody else' s enjoying the same good.

Examples of public goods are not as rare as one might expect. A flood control dam is a public good. Once the dam is built, all persons living in the area will benefit--irrespective of their own contribution to the construction cost of the dam. The same holds true for highway signs or aids to navigation. Once a lighthouse is built, no ship of any nationality can be effectively excluded from the utilization of the lighthouse for navigational purposes. National defense is another example. Even a person who voted against military expenditures or did not pay any taxes will benefit from the protection afforded.

It is no easy task to determine the social costs and social benefits associated with a public good. There is no practicable way of charging drivers for looking at highway signs, sailors for watching a lighthouse, and citizens for the security provided to them through national defense: Because the market does not provide the necessary signals, economic analysis has to be substituted for the impersonal judgement of the marketplace.

With what topic is the passage mainly concerned?

A.Mechanisms for safer navigation.

B.The economic structure of the marketplace.

C.A specific group of commodities.

D.The advantages of lowering taxes.

听力原文: In Hollywood, everybody wants to be rich, famous and beautiful. Nobody wants to be old, unknown and poor. For Hollywood kids, life can be difficult, because they grow up in such an unreal atmosphere. Their parents are ambitious and the children are part of the parents' ambitions. Parents pay for wasteful grand parties, expensive cars and designer clothes.

When every dream can come true, kids don't learn the value of anything because they have everything. A thirteen-year-old boy, Trent Maguire, has a driver, credit cards and unlimited cash to do what he wants when he wants to. "One day, I'll earn more than my dad!" he boasts. Parents buy care and attention for the children because they have no time to give it themselves. Amanda's mother employs a personal trainer, a bodyguard, a singing coach and a counselor to look after all her fifteen-year-old daughter's needs.

Often there is no parent at home most days, so children decide whether to make their own meals or go out to restaurants, when to watch television or do homework. They organize their own social lives. They play no childhood games. They become adults before they're ready. Hollywood has always been the city of dreams. The kids there live unreal lives where money, beauty and pleasure are the only gods. Will children around the world soon start to think the same? Or do they already?

Questions:

Why is life said to be difficult for Hollywood kids?

What does the speaker say about Trent Maguire, a thirteen-year-old boy?

Why does Amanda's mother employ other people to look after her needs?

What will probably have negative effects on the lives of Hollywood kids?

(33)

A.The atmosphere they live in is rather unreal.

B.Their parents put too much pressure on them.

C.It's hard for them to get along with other kids.
