Certainly people don't seem less interested in success and its signs now than formerly. Summer homes, European travel, BMWs—the locations, place names and name brands may change, but such items don't seem less in demand today than a decade or two years ago. What has happened is that people cannot confess fully to their dreams, as easily and openly as once they could, lest they be thought pushing, acquisitive and vulgar. Instead, we are treated to fine hypocritical spectacles, which now more than ever seem in ample supply: the critic of American materialism with a Southampton summer home; the publisher of radical books who takes his meals in three star restaurants; the journalist advocating participatory democracy in all phases of life, whose own children are enrolled in private schools. For such people and many more perhaps not so exceptional, the proper formulation is, "Succeed at all costs but avoid appearing ambitious".
The attacks on ambition are many and come from various angles; its public defenders are few and unimpressive, where they are not extremely unattractive. As a result, the support for ambition as a healthy impulse, a quality to be admired and fixed in the mind of the young, is probably lower than it has ever been in the United States. This doesn't mean that ambition is an end, that people no longer feel its stirrings and promptings, but only that, no longer openly honored, it is less openly professed. Consequences follow from this, of course, some of which are that ambition is driven underground, or made sly. Such, then, is the way things stand: on the left angry critics, on the right stupid supporters, and in the middle, as usual, the majority of earnest people trying to get on in life.
It is generally believed that ambition may be well regarded if ______.
A.its returns well compensate for the sacrifices
B.it is rewarded with money, fame and power
C.its goals are spiritual rather than material
D.it is shared by the rich and the famous

Is there something as truth? For a good many centuries "the search for truth" has been (31) the noblest activity of the human mind, but the seekers after truth have come to such (32) conclusions that it often seems that very little progress has been made. (33) , there are many people who reel that we are actually going backward. They (34) , often contemptuously, that we have accumulated more "knowledge" than our ancestors, but they think we are farther from the truth than ever, or even that we have (35) the truth that we once possessed. If people look for anything long enough without finding it, the question naturally arises (36) the thing is really there to find. You have seen a picture of an animal with a lion's head, a goat's body, and a serpent's tail--and maybe an eagle's wings for good (37) There is plenty of evidence that each part of this animal (38) --but there is no (39) evidence that the parts ever occur in this combination. It is at least conceivable that the seekers after "truth" have made a similar mistake and invented an (40) combination.A.regardedB.consideredC.ponderedD.referred

The holiday season is a time for celebrating with friends and family. It is often called the“giving season”because during the holidays people give gifts and they also have celebrations and decorate (装饰) their homes. Unfortunately, this can all lead to a lot of waste. And some parts of the holidays create a lot of waste- for example, holiday cards, decorations, the tree, entertaining, and gift wrap. However, there are ways to reduce the amount of waste you create. Experts recently gave some ideas to the Associated Press. One of those experts (专家) is Liz Vaccariello. Vaccariello says this year is a great year to think about using products that can be recycled when celebrating the holidays. She said,“It is a great way to feel good as you enter the giving season.”Another expert is Melissa Ozava. She is an editor at Martha Stevart Living and suggests thinking carefully about what you buy. Ozava says that now more than ever we should be asking ourselves: Do I really want this? will use it? And how will it affect the planet? The concerns about paper waste have caused many people to look at other choices for vrapping a present. You can use reusable bags for gifts. Vaccariello suggests keeping gift bags and other decorations that you receive. You can reuse them the next time you give a gift. You can buy from companies that make environmentally -friendly gift wrap. Some companies make recyclable wrapping paper and do not use materials that are not recyclable. You can also urap gifts in old maps, pages from magazines, and art paper. The person receiving the gift could use the urapping for something else. Ozava says she likes the Japanese tradition of furoshiki. This is where gifts are vrapped in cloth. The pretty and strong urapping cloths can be used for other things, instead of just being throvmavay. You could also vrap a gift in a colorful scarf or tablecloth. This makes the urapping cloth part of the gift itself. Instead of decorating a gift with something plastic, you can use something natural such as pinecones, rosemary, or 6 other S ever green.

Many people are afraid to assert themselves (insist upon their own rights).Dr.Robert Alberti, author of Stand Up' Speak Out, and Talk Back, thinks it's because their self-esteem (自尊) is low."Our whole set-up makes people doubt themselves," says Alberti. "There's always a 'superior' around—a parent, a teacher, a boss—who 'knows better'."
But Alberti and other scientists are doing something to help people to assert themselves. They offer "assertiveness training" courses (AT). In the AT courses people learn that they have a right to be themselves. They learn to speak out and feel good about doing so. They learn to be aggressive (敢闯的,有闯劲儿的)without hurting other people.
In one way, learning to speak out is to overcome fear. A group taking an AT course will help the timid person to lose his fear. But AT uses an even stronger motive—the need to share. The timid person speaks out in the group because he wants to tell how he feels. AT says you can get to feel good about yourself. And once you do, you can learn to speak out.
In the passage, the writer talks about the problem that______.
A.some people are too easy-going
B.some people are too timid
C.there are too many superiors around us
D.some people dare not defend their own rights
