听力原文: In the past two years, millions of Americans have suddenly embraced the bicycle as if it were a startling new invention. Annual bike sales doubled between 1960 and 1970, and there are nearly 70 million bikes in the United States today. That's more than two for every three automobiles.

Of course, the bike has been around for more than 150 years, and this isn't America's first bicycle boom. A wave of bike enthusiasm swept the land in the late 1800s and bicycle production hit two million units in 1897. Then with the coming of the auto, bicycling declined, and for decades remained popular only with children and a few adult faddists.

Now, national preoccupation with air pollution and physical fitness has brought the bike back to the forefront—particularly with adults. More than eight million bikes were sold in the United States last year and a third of them went to adults. The year before, only 15 percent of new bike sales were for adults.

(30)

A.The use of bikes is a new invention in the U.S.

B.Annual bike sales doubled in the 60s in the U.S.

C.The producers made 70 million bikes every year.

D.The number of bikes is two times that of cars in the U.S.

请根据下面短文回答第下列各题: Temperatures(温度)around the world are going up year after year. A report shows that the ten wan nest years since 1860 all happened after 1987. Of those ten, nine happened after 1990. There port also says the increase(上升) in temperature over the past 25 years is greater than that over the past 1,000 years. Ken Davidson, a world-famous scientist, agrees with the scientific findings that global (全球的) warming is happening just because of what people do on the earth. He says one of the most important reasons for the higher temperatures is the fact that cities are getting bigger and bigger. Studies show that cities are hotter than other places. Reports Show that many places around the world have had unusual weather in the past few years because of global warming. Most of Asia, for example, is warmer than before, and in India hundreds of people have even died from the hot and dry weather each year. Parts of Africa have of-ten had unusually heavy rains while other parts of Africa have had unusually dry weather. In parts of Europe, more than 100 people died from heavy rainfall in September 2002. Yet large parts of North and South America had very dry weather in the same year. What is the text about?

Sixteen years ago, Eileen Doyle's husband, an engineer, took his four children up for an e
arly morning cup of tea, packed a small case and was never seen or heard of again. Eileen was astonished and in a state of despair. They had been a happy family and, as far as she knew, there had been nothing wrong with their marriage.

Every day of the year a small group of men and women quietly pack a few belongings and without so much as a note or a good-bye close the front door for the last time, leaving their debts, their worries and their confused families behind them.

Last year, more than 1,200 men and nearly as many women were reported missing from home--the highest in 15 years. Many did return home within a year, but others rejected the past completely and are now living a new life somewhere under a different identity.

To those left behind this form. of desertion is a terrible blow to their pride and self-confidence. Even the finality of death might be preferable. At least it does not imply rejection or failure. Worse than that, people can be left with an unfinished marriage, not knowing whether they will have to wait seven years before they are free to start a fresh life.

Clinical psychologist Paul Brown believes most departures of this kind to be well planned rather than impulsive. "It's typical of the kind of personality which seems able to ignore other people's pain and difficulties. Running away, like killing yourself, is a highly aggressive act. By creating an absence the people left behind feel guilty, upset and empty."

When her husband left home, Eileen Doyle ______.

A.could not forgive him for taking the children

B.had been expecting it to happen for some time

C.could not understand why

D.blamed herself for what had happened

Section B

Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice.

Unfortunately sales results over the last year have failed to come up to our expectations. A number of factors have been responsible, but basically it is the result of too many companies chasing the microcomputer market which is no longer expanding as fast as it once was.

Looking at the past year in detail, it must be admitted that the sales have declined considerably over the period. Our market share in wholesales has dropped from 21% to only 10%. The lack of a good local distributor in Asia has meant that our sales of the Obec series have collapsed despite the huge jump in the microcomputer market there during the past year. Our dominance of that part of the market has been lost to Strong, but once we find a new distributor we should come back strongly.

Retail sales in general have been a problem. There has been a tendency for the big high street stores to concentrate on high volume turnover of a few fairly well-known makers. When they stopped promotion of the Obec 1500, sales slumped by 50%. We are negotiating a fresh marketing deal for the new Obec 1600. Once this is settled we expect a gradual rise in sales, which will be followed by a big TV advertising campaign at the appropriate time. What we are facing now is that we have not been able to push the Obec 1500 as much as we would have liked because of insufficient advertising.

Most of our advertising budget went on the promotion of the Obec Extra before last Christmas. Unfortunately we have failed consistently to find the proper marketing strategy for the Extra, which has not been sold to either the leisure or the business market.

The serious business market has performed worse than any other in the period under review. The main factor was the introduction of the new Legend 586 Plus, when sales reduced over a period of several months. With this background it is natural that sales of the Obec 1000 and 2000 have gone into a slide. They showed a slight upturn just after the introduction of the 586 Plus, only to crash again a few weeks later.

What purpose does this passage possibly serve?

A.A company introduction to its employees.

B.A market analysis for a specific industry to inform. a client.

C.An annual report of a company to direct its future decision.

D.A marketing strategy proposal for discussion.

Insurance is the sharing of risks. Nearly everyone is exposed to risk of some sort. The ho
use owner, for example, knows that his property can be damaged by fire; the ship- owner knows that his vessel may be lost at sea; the breadwinner knows that he may die at an early age and leave his family poorer. On the other hand, not every house is damaged by fire, not every vessel lost at sea. If these persons each put a small sum into a pool(集体储备金), there will be enough to meet the needs of the few who do suffer loss. In other words, the losses of the few are met from the contributions of the many. This is the basis of insurance. Those who administer the pool of contributions are insurers.

The legal basis of all insurance is the policy. This is a printed form. of contract on stout paper of the best quality. It states that in return for the regular payment by the insured of a named sum of money, called the premium which is usually paid every year, the insurer will pay a sum of money or compensation for loss, if the risk or event insured against actually happens.

The premium for an insurance naturally depends upon how likely the risk is to happen, as suggested by past experience. If companies fix their premiums too high, there will be more competition in their branch of insurance and they may lose business. On the other hand if they make the premium too low, they will lose money and may even have to drop out of business. So the ordinary forces of supply and demand keep premiums at a level satisfactory to both the insurer and the insured.

According to the passage, insurance is possible because ______.

A.only a small proportion of the insured suffer loss

B.only insured people suffer loss

C.nearly everyone suffers loss

D.everyone suffers loss
