W: What kinds of questions?
M: You took an English class from Professor Sanford, didn't you?
W: Yes.
M: Well, I've heard lots about her and I'mthinking about taking her Basics in English class next semester.
W: Don't do it.
M: Why? You didn't like the class?
W: The class was interesting enough, but Professor Sanford is one of the most difficult teachers I have ever had. She expects a great deal from her students, so if you plan to take the course, be prepared to work very hard. I remember doing homework for at least three hours a day, just for her class. It was very tiring because I still had to do the work for all my other clasps. She's an extremely intelligent person and so she expects similar brilliance from her students.
M: What about the woman herself? Is she reasonable?
W: Yes, she most definitely is. She loves her students and is very understanding of our problems. She was always available before, during, and after classes to help us with any ideas we couldn't understand. I really liked her as a person. I just hated all the reading we had to do in classical literature.
M: Well, I happen to like classical literature.
W: Then, you'll love the class.I was more interested in theory, and we barely touched that. What a semester!

听力原文:W: I want to register for this mathematics course.
M: I'm sorry. Registration is closed.
W: Closed? The clerk told me I could come back and register anytime during the first week of the class.
M: Well, that's not possible. The computer's official student account has already been sent to the state. And that's what our budget is based on. Who told you that anyway?
W: A woman here when I tried to register three weeks ago. She said I just had to pay a late fee.
M: She must be a temporary worker. She doesn't have much training. Why didn't you register then?
W: She said I couldn't until I had my birth certificate. Here it is.
M: Your birth certificate?
W: Well, I'm a new part-time student, so she asked for the identification. I don't drive, so I don't have a driver's license.
M: Hm. There's no reason to demand a birth certificate. We only need to establish residency. A phone bill with your name and address on would be fine.
W: Really? Only proof of my address?
M: Yes. I'm afraid she gave you the wrong information. Still, you have to wait and take your math class next semester.
W: But that's not fair.
M: Well, I sympathize with you, but frankly, I don't think there's anything anyone can do for you. You're trapped in the system. If you want to, you can talk to the director. She'll help if she can.
W: Great!
M: Don't get your hopes up!
(23)
A.She doesn't want to pay the late fee.
B.She is given incorrect information.
C.She can't afford to pay her tuition.

If you look at a map of Europe, you'll see a group of islands--one larger island off the northwest coats, one smaller and many tiny ones. These make up what is called the British Isles (不列填群岛). The largest island of the British Isles in Britain. It is also called Great Britain. The smaller island is Ireland (爱尔兰)。
Britain is divided into three parts: Scotland, Wales and England. But sometimes the word " England" is used instead of "Britain". Why so?
In anceient times, what is Britain now used to be three different countries. People in these different counntries spoke different languages. Over many years the three countries became one. England in the largest and richest of the three and it has the most people. So the English people take it for granted that their own name stands for the whole island.
There's another thing that confuses people; sometimes you may hear people say "the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. "That is the official name of the country. Northern Irelnd is only one sixth of the island of Ireland. The rest of the island is an independent state, called the Republic of Ireland. So we have the names of "England", "Britain"," Great Britain", and "the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". Now do you know what each of them means?
