Reading Comprehension (Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each of the passages is followed by 5 questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line through the center.)

Ask a mom if she’s happier now that she has a child, and she’ll usually say yes. But psychologists who study happiness often report a different picture. Being the mom of a young child (especially one under 3) is rewarding, but also a real strain on your mood. “Moment to moment, you may be tired and sometimes angry, though kids do bring joy,” says Peter Ubel, M.D., a professor of medicine and psychology at the University of Michigan. In fact, on their list of enjoyable activities, moms rank childcare lower than eating, exercising, or watching TV, according to a University of Michigan study, and kid care rates only slightly higher than housework, working, or commuting!

One reason for the difference between moms and experts: selective memory. When psychologists ask moms in a general way if they like spending time with their kids, the overwhelming majority say they do because they’re thinking of fun activities like reading a book or playing in the park. When they’re specifically asked to describe their actual daily routine, they remember the hours they spent struggling to get their child dressed or ready for bed.

Maybe, though, the psychologists are missing the intensity of joy that time spent with your child can bring. Luckily, those moments can overcome your daily frustrations. “Happiness is more than just that smiley feeling,” says Karen Reivich, Ph.D., a research associate in the Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania. “It’s also feeling a connection to something larger than yourself. When people are in service to something bigger, they describe their lives as filled with meaning.”

16、Which of the following best summarizes Peter Ubel’s opinion of being the mom of a young child?

· A.It makes the mom exhausted.

· B.It is both rewarding and stressful.

· C.It makes the mom easily irritated.

· D.It is a frustrating experience.

17、According to a University of Michigan study, which of the following ranks higher than childcare on moms’ list of enjoyable activities?

· A.Eating, housework or commuting.

· B.Eating, exercising or watching TV.

· C.Exercising, housework or watching TV.

· D.Exercising, commuting or watching TV.

18、What does the underlined phrase “selective memory”(Para. 2) mean?

· A.Moms often tend to remember only the happy moments with their children.

· B.Moms often tend to remember only the hours they spent taking care of their children.

· C.Experts tend to remember only the happy moments the moms spend with their children.

· D.Experts tend to remember only the hours the moms spend with their children.

A

19、According to Karen Reivich, how do the moms’ moments of intense joy compare with their daily frustrations?

· A.Those moments make them feel more excited.

· B.Those moments make them feel more relaxed.

· C.Those moments can overcome their daily frustrations.

· D.Those moments can do nothing about their daily frustrations.

20、From the last sentence of this passage we can infer that _______.

· A.moms have only the smiley feeling about childcare

· B.moms feel frustrated at taking care of their children

· C.moms enjoy doing housework as a part of their childcare

· D.moms regard childcare as a meaningful part of their lives

No matter who you are or where you come from, one thing is certain: you are acquainted with the mosquito(蚊子)—although you probably wish you weren’t. Mosquitoes are everywhere. They can be found all over the world, and they come in more than 2,500 species. Somewhere, at some time, you have surely met at least one.

No one loves the mosquito. But unfortunately the mosquito may decide that she loves you. Yes, She. Only the female mosquito bites. It’s not because she’s unfriendly: she needs blood to reproduce. Female mosquito is quite selective, and she chooses her victims carefully. First, she uses sensors to find her victim. With these sensors, she tests your body moisture, body warmth, and chemical substances in your sweat. If she likes what she finds, she bites. But if you don’t appeal to her, she’ll reject you for someone more appetizing. The next time a mosquito bites you, just remember that you were chosen. You’re special.

If the mosquito likes you, she settles onto your flesh very gently, and she breaks your skin with her proboscis tip. It’s a kind of mouth and it sticks out just below the mosquito’s eyes. She stabs the proboscis tip into your skin at once, and if she hits a blood vessel, she’ll get a full dinner in about a minute. After that, the mosquito is tired. Heavy with your blood, she picks a spot—on a leave or a stone—to lay her eggs. Just one drop of blood will produce hundreds of eggs.

21、By the sentence “you are acquainted with the mosquito—although you probably wish you weren’t”, the author means that people _______.

· A.don’t like mosquito but it is always there

· B.know mosquito and wish them well

· C.wish all the mosquito disappeared

· D.want to be friendly to mosquito but fail at last

A

22、Why is it only female mosquito that bites?

· A.She is more unfriendly than male.

· B.She is greater in number.

· C.Blood is her favorite food.

· D.Blood enables her to lay eggs.

23、To select whom to bite, the mosquito’s sensors may NOT test _______.

· A.the temperature of the body

· B.the color of the skin

· C.the chemical elements in sweat

· D.the wetness of the body

24、According to the last paragraph, the function of proboscis tip is _______.

· A.to find where to bite

· B.to stick into the flesh and suck blood

· C.to remove the skin and collect blood

· D.to decide whom to reject

25、The main idea of this passage could be _______.

· A.why and how mosquito bites people

· B.why people dislike mosquito

· C.what kind of mosquito bites people

· D.how to identify female mosquito

A

Laughter brings a range of health benefits into your daily life. Laughing boosts your immune system. Just look at the work of Dr. Lee Berk, of Loma Linda University in California. Berk doesn’t tell jokes beside patients’ beds, but he does research humor. He has shown that laughing can lead to an increase in antibodies and other cells that fight viruses.

Other studies show that laughter might be helpful for people in hospitals. An organization called Rx Laughter carried out a study about humor in the hospital. The results suggest that laughter might help children deal with painful medical treatments.

The study involved children between the ages of 8 and 14. The kids placed their hands in cold water for as long as they could while watching funny old TV shows, such as I Love Lucy. Guess what happened? The kids were able to withstand pain for a longer period of time when they were watching a funny video than when watching no video. Those who laughed more felt less pain.

“This means that humor can keep you away from thinking about a painful process and thus make it seem less painful,” says Dr. Margaret Stuber, the main researcher for the study. She works at the University of California at Los Angeles. As Stuber also points out, humor may even be good for your emotional health because physical and emotional health are connected. “If you can say to yourself that a medical treatment wasn’t as bad as you thought it would be, then you’re less likely to have nightmares, fears about going to the doctor, and other related anxieties,” she says.

26、According to Dr. Lee Berk, laughing benefits us because ________.

· A.it makes us more humorous

· B.it helps us feel more relaxed

· C.it helps us deal with painful medical treatments

· D.it leads to an increase in antibodies and the cells that fight viruses

27、Why did the children between the ages of 8 and 14 put their hands in cold water?

· A.Because they wanted to cool their hands off.

· B.Because they took part in an experiment on laughter.

· C.Because they wanted to test their ability to resist cold.

· D.Because they used to do this while watching old TV shows.

28、According to Dr. Margaret Stuber, how does humor help children deal with painful medical treatments?

· A.It makes them laugh more.

· B.It makes them emotionally healthy.

· C.It makes them think less about a painful process.

· D.It makes them feel less worried about the treatments.

29、Which of the following is true about laughter?

· A.Laughter cures people of all their diseases.

· B.Laughter solves all the mental problems.

· C.Laughter is beneficial to both physical and emotional health.

· D.Laughter makes children watch old TV shows for a longer time.

How much do you know about nutrition? If your knowledge is similar to that of food shoppers who answered three surveys for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, then you probably share some wide-spread misinformation about nutrition. Check your answers to the following statements. Is it true or false?

Statement 1: Fresh vegetables cooked at home are always more nutritious than canned or frozen vegetables. False. The nutritional difference depends more on how vegetables are handled or prepared than in whether they are bought fresh or packaged. Overcooking, for example, destroys many nutrients. Vegetables cooked in too much water can lose a significant amount of vitamins.

Statement 2: When dieting, avoid starchy(淀粉类)foods, such as bread or potatoes. False. If you cut out starchy foods, such as peas, potatoes, bread, and rice, you cut out very good sources of several B vitamins, Vitamin C, and other nutrients. Moreover, ounce for ounce, bread and potatoes have fewer calories than sirloin steak and roast beef.

Statement 3: Taking extra vitamins beyond the recommended daily allowances won’t give you more energy. True. It’s widely believed that extra vitamins provide more energy. But taking more than the body needs doesn’t make it function better, just as overfilling your gas tank doesn’t make your car run faster.

If you answered these questions correctly, you can for the time being consider yourself well informed about food and nutrition by today’s standards. But remember that nutrition is a complex and growing science and that today’s beliefs may be changed as new information becomes available.

31、The first paragraph implies that many people ________.

· A.are well informed about nutrition

· B.don’t care about nutrition

· C.have much knowledge of nutrition

· D.have incorrect ideas about nutrition

32、According to paragraph 2, which is NOT true about nutrition?

· A.Overcooking destroys many nutrients.

· B.It makes no difference how you prepare vegetables.

· C.Both fresh and packaged vegetables are nutritious.

· D.Vitamins in vegetable could be lost during cooking.

33、Which of the following is a correct attitude towards starchy food?

· A.Starchy foods are unnecessary in a balanced diet.

· B.Bread and steak have the same amount of calories per ounce.

· C.Valuable nutrients could be found in starchy foods.

· D.Starchy foods include only peas, potatoes, bread and rice.

· A.one should take as much vitamins as possible

35、A good title for this article would be________.

· A.Tips of Losing Weight Effectively

· B.Test Your Nutrition IQ
