Concerning money or anything else, conflicts between husband and wife usually reflect
a power straggle. Conflicts between parent and child often center around the same issue. As children enter adolescence, they begin to demand greater freedom to go where they please, do what they please, and make decisions without parental interference. Many American parents do not know how to deal with their teenagers and seek advice from books, lectures, and parent gaining courses. Parents want to maintain a friendly relationship with their teenagers and also want to guide them so that their behavior. will be whatever the parents consider proper and constructive.

But in a society of rapidly changing social and moral values, parents and children often disagree about what is important and what is fight.

(77) Arguments may concern such unimportant matters as styles of dress or hairdos. But quarrels may also concern school work, after school jobs, decisions, use of the family car, dating, and sex behavior. Some families have serious problems with teenagers who drop out of school, run away from home, or use illegal drugs. Because so much publicity is given to the problem teenager, one gets the impression that all teenagers are troublemakers. Actually, relatively few adolescents do anything wrong, and nearly all grow up into "solid citizens" who fulfill most of their parents' expectations. In fact, recent studies show that the "generation gap" is narrowing. The vast majority of teenagers share most of their parents' values and ideas. Many parents feel that they get along with their adolescents quite well.

According to the writer, conflicts between husband and wife usually reflect ______.

A.feeling of hatred

B.power struggle

C.that they don' t care for each other

D.that they may appeal to divorce

Young people tend to be critical of their parents at times and blame them for most ofthe misunderstandings between them. I think it is true that parents often underestimate theirteenage children and also(36)how they themselves felt when young.

For example, young people like doing things on spur of the moment: it is one of theirways of showing that they can accept a(37). Older people worry more(38); most ofthem plan things ahead, at least in the back of their minds, and do not like their plans to beupset by something(39).

So my advice to you is this: when you want to borrow the family car or get your mother tomend something for you, you will have better success ifyou can possibly ask in advance.

Young people also make it harder for their parents to trust them because they liketo(40)them. Choosing a husband or wife is one of the most important decisions in a person‘s life. In many cultures, young men and women are(21)to choose their own marriage partners. In some cultures, however, parents(22)he right to arrange their children‘s marriages. Such arranged marriages have both advantages and disadvantages.

One advantage of having parents arrange a marriage is financial(23). Of course, money doesn‘t automatically bring happiness, but a(24)of money certainly causes stress in any relationship. A second advantage of an arranged marriage is that parents may(25)a better choice than their children. They are not only older but also more(26)in life experience. Also, parents have been married; therefore, they know better what qualities are(27)in a spouse.

On the other hand, arranged marriages may have some disadvantages. One obvious disadvantage is that parents may choose a wrong person in(28), and the young couple may never be happy together. A second obvious disadvantage is that a young man or woman may already have(29)in love with someone else. If the parents force their children to tie the knot, the result will be a disaster to all concerned.

第6题

Children in the United States are exposed to many influences other than that of their fami
lies. Television is the most significant of these influences, because the habit of watching television usually begins before children start attending school. And, by the time that the average child finishes high school, he or she will have spent 18,000 hours in front of a television set as opposed to 12,000 hours in a classroom.

Parents are concerned about these figures. They are also concerned about the lack of quality in television programs for children. The degree of violence in many of these shows also worries them. Even if it is unreal--a cartoon cat beating up a cartoon mouse with a baseball bat--this violence may have a negative effect on the young minds exposed to it. Studies indicate that, when children are exposed to violence, they may become aggressive or insecure.

Parents are also concerned about the commercials that their children see on television. Many parents would like to see fewer commercials during programs for children. And some parents feel that these shows should not have any commercials at all because young minds are not mature enough to deal with the claims made by advertisers.

Educational television has no commercials and has programs for children that many parents approve of. The most famous of these is "Sesame Street", which tries to give preschool children a head start in learning the alphabet and numbers. It also tries to teach children useful things about the world in which they live.

Even though most parents and educators give "Sesame Street" and shows like it high marks for quality, some critics argue that all television, whether educational or not, is harmful to children. These critics feel that the habit of watching hours of television every day turns children into bored and passive consumers of their world rather than encouraging them to become active explorers of it.

We still do not know enough about the effects of watching television to be able to say whether or not it is good for children. Until we do, perhaps it would be wise to put a warning on television sets such as the one on cigarette packages: "Caution: Watching Too Much Television May Be Harmful to Your Child's Developing Mind."

We can infer from the text that ______.

A.children may imitate what they have seen on television

B.a cartoon program is not harmful if it is not real

C.parents are strongly opposed to children watching TV

D.the quality of children's programs is not the parents' main concern

Packaging is a very important form. of advertising. A package can sometimes motivate people to buy products. For example, a small child might ask for a breakfast food contained in a box with a picture of a TV character. The child is more interested in the picture than in breakfast food. Pictures for children to color or cut out, games printed on a package, or a small gift inside a box also motivate many children to buy products -- or to ask their parents to buy for them.

Some packages suggest that a buyer will get something for nothing. Food products sold in reusable containers are examples of this. Although a similar product in a plain container might cost less, people often prefer to buy the product in a reusable glass or dish, because they believe the container is free. However, the cost of the container is added to the cost of the product.

The size of a package also motivates a buyer. Maybe the package has "Economy Size" or" Family Size" printed on it. This suggests that the larger size has the most product for the least money. But that is not always true. To find it out, a buyer has to know how the product is sold and the price of the basic unit.

The information on the package should provide some answers. But the important thing for any buyer to remember is that a package is often an advertisement. The words and pictures do not tell the whole story. Only the product inside can do that.

"A buyer will get something for nothing "in Paragraph 2 most probably means that().

Perhaps the most important defining characteristic...

Perhaps the most important defining characteristic of a human being is culture. The term culture as used here is not limited to operas, paintings, and other artistic endeavors. These are seen by anthropologists (人类学家) as examples of culture: culture itself is the customary manner in which human groups learn to organize their behavior. and thought in relation to their environment. Defined in this manner, culture has three principal aspects: behavioral, perceptual and material. The behavioral component refers to how people act, especially how they interact with each other. In child rearing (养育) , for example, parents and children tend to interact in a relatively patterned fashion. Then there is the manner of perception, the ways people perceive the world. For example, parents have a limited range of ideas about how they should act, and what significance parenthood carries in the scheme of things. Finally, there is the material component of culture — the physical objects that we produce. Most of what goes into making up culture is a result of learning — modifying behavior. in response to experience within an environment. Learning is practically universal among organisms. But no other organism has a greater capacity for learning than a human, or depends as much on learned behavior. for its survival. While the survival of most other organisms is to some extent safeguarded by instincts, humans rely heavily on culture for their survival. People must learn how to live in a particular social and physical setting, biology playing but a minimal (最小限度的) role. The ideas and modes of behavior. that constitute culture are transmitted largely by a complex system of symbols that includes language. Humans have evolved an extremely complex system of communication that is unique to our species. Without it the creation of human culture as we know it would be impossible. Question:Learning is most essential for _________.

A、all the organisms to survive

B、all the organisms to acquire learned behavior

C、human beings to respond to experience within an environment

D、human beings to survive and live in a society

The family in the western world has changed greatly during the last two centuries.

Before the nineteenth century, families usually arranged marriages for their children. Young people did not decide whom they wanted to marry. After they got married, they usually had a lot of children. This family was an important part of the larger family of aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, and other relatives.

By the nineteenth century, most young people could choose whom they wanted to marry. Marriage joined two people and not two families. The reason two people got married was because they loved each other. It was not just because the families wanted them to marry.

At the same time, parents began to realize that they had to take very good care of their children. They had to take care of their health and try to give them an education. Before this, most people did not go to school. But now education was necessary for a good life.

The parents decided they should have fewer children so they could give each one a good life. They thought it was important for the mother to spend as much time as possible with her children. Before, the family all worked together at home. After 1800 more fathers worked outside the home for money. Mothers stayed home and had greater control of the home and children. Most homes didn't produce anything. The other relatives were still important, but they were separated more than before.

Family life is changing even faster in the United States today. There is almost one divorce for every two marriages. Over 10 percent of families have a mother and children but no father. At least half of all children will live part of the time with only one parent. Fifty percent of all mothers work outside the home.

Some social scientists think that soon there will be no family life in the United States as we know it today. They do not know how people will live. Others think society needs families, and we will always have them.

The family in the western world

A.has changed a lot during the last two centuries

B.hasn't changed at all during the last two centuries

C.has changed a little during the last two centuries

D.has become bigger and bigger
