The favorite food in the United States is the hamburger (汉堡包). The favorite place to buy a hamburger is a fast food restaurant. At fast food restaurants, people order their food, wait a few minutes, and carry it to their tables themselves. People also take their food out of the restaurant and eat it in their cars or in their homes. At some fast food restaurants. people can order their food, pay for it and pick it up without leaving their cars.
There are many kinds of fast food restaurants in the United States. The greatest in number sell hamburgers, French fries (油炸马铃薯片) and so on. They are popular food among Americans. Fast food restaurants are popular because they reflect (反映) American life style. Customers can wear any type of dress when they go to a fast food place. Second, they are fast. 听力原文:Friend: I tried to phone you yesterday.
Diane: Oh, sorry. I was busy all day and then I went to London in the evening for a meal with some friends.
Friend: Did you take your car?
Diane: I left it at home. Parking's such a problem. But the underground was closed for repairs so I had to take the bus. It was quite slow.
Friend: Did you go to your favourite Spanish restaurant?
Diane: I was hoping to try some Mexican food but my friends booked a table in a Chinese place.
Friend: Was it expensive?
Diane: Quite cheap actually, and the food was very good — but it's only a small restaurant so a lot of people had to wait for tables — and it was quite noisy.
Friend: You didn't stay there and talk afterwards then!
Diane: We went for a walk along the river. It was too late for the cinema.
Friend: Didn't you get wet? It reined here all evening.
Diane: The wind was very cold but it stayed dry.
Friend: And then it snowed during the night!
Diane: That was after I got home. But I had a really good evening!

For years I have had the idea that those mirrors keep the blurred image(模糊影像) of every- one who has walked past before them. I think the mirrors have a memory. Every Cuban who has lived or set foot in Miami over the last 30 years has, at one time or another, seen himself or herself reflected on those shiny surfaces. Miami is a Cuban city not only because of the number of Cubans who live there but also because of the number who have died there. The Versailles is a shiny place where dead people are buried. The history of Little Havana is written on those walls. This may have been why, when the mirrors came down in 1991, there was such anger against it that some of them had to be put back. The Hall of Mirrors is also a house of spirits.
60. What is most special about Versailles according to the writer?
[A] The blurred images reflected on the windows.
[ B ] The number of French customers.
[ C] The expensive Cuban food.
[ D] The walls of mirrors.

Choosing a Restaurant
Some restaurants are open for breakfast; others are open twenty-four hours a day. A number of restaurants call themselves “family restaurants”. Many of these serve no alcohol and have fairly restricted menus which include steaks, hamburgers, omelets and sandwiches, and all are at very reasonable prices. They may also serve smaller and cheaper children’s portions. Note that many American restaurants are “specialty” restaurants. They may serve only, or mainly, steaks, sea food, etc.
When to Eat
Many restaurants, especially the more expensive ones, open at about 11:30 a.m. (midday, rather than 1 p.m., is the most normal time for lunch in the USA), and some remain open until the evening, so it is possible to order a meal throughout the afternoon. In many areas, it is usual for people to leave work and go out for an evening male at 5 p.m. or 6 p.m., rather than waiting until later.
Reserving a Table
Eating out is rather popular in the USA, and it is often necessary to make a reservation. You will sometimes see short lines of people waiting for tables at restaurants- it is more pleasant to wait in the bar, of course, if there is one- but in fact the lines move very quickly.
Arriving at the Restaurant
When you arrive at most restaurants, you should not just go in and sit down- unless you see a sign, saying “Please seat yourself”. Usually you will have to wait for a “host” or “hostess” to lead you to a table. Often there will be a sign that reads, “Please wait to be seated”. Do not expect to share a table with other parties, even if the restaurant is crowded. It is just not done.

"It's becoming harder and harder for these firms to grow," said Jim Brown, a professor of marketing at Virginia Tech University. "I think in the United States fast food has reached a saturation (饱和) point because of the number of competitors and the number of outlets."
Fast-food restaurant revenues grew 2. 5 percent in 1996, according to industry figures, the slowest since the recession of 1991. That is for cry from(大不相同于)the levels of the 1970s and 1980s. According to the Food Marketing Institute, consumers are using supermarkets for 21 percent of take-home food, nearly double the level of a year ago. While fast-food restaurants still lead, their share slipped significantly, from 48 percent in 1996 to 41 percent in 1997.
"Consumers have never been more demanding than they are today," said Michael Sansolo, senior vice president of the Supermarket Trade Group. "They are pressed for time. Money is still an issue…but their tastes are increasingly diverse--whether it's gourmet foods, ethnic foods or organic offerings."
Meanwhile, the aging of the baby-boom population--and the growth in the number of so-called "empty nesters" with grown children--has meant a surge in the number of people willing to spend more for upscale items. This generation "will have the luxury of being more discriminating" as their children leave home, notes Harry Balzer, vice president of the Chicago-based NPD consulting group. Balzer said some 18 million baby boomers will become empty-nesters in the next l 0 years, leaving them with more disposable income to spend on dining out. "Fast and cheap will still be driving factors.., but our definitions of fast and cheap may be changing."
Various reports suggest industry leader McDonald's is struggling, losing market share, with lower same-store sales while cutting back the number of new outlets in the United States, partly due to pressure from franchisers who don't want to be squeezed. The company replaced the head of its 12,000 US restaurant chain last October amid a slump in US market share.

A.Fast food disappoints consumers.
B.People prefer less expensive food.
C.McDonald's dominates the market of fast food.
D.Fast food is losing its attraction.
