????C

In January 2004, a 20-year-old woman ran a red light while talking on a cell phone. Her car knocked into another car crossing with the green light directly in front of her. The police found the driver never touched her brakes(刹车) and was traveling 48 mph when she hit the other car. The police were told that the driver was not looking down, pressing buttons. She was looking straight out of the windshield(挡风玻璃) talking on her cell phone as she passed four cars and a schoolbus.

Vision is the most important sense for safe driving. Yet, drivers using cell phones are likely to “look at” but not “see” objects. It is said that drivers using cell phones look but fail to see up to 50 percent of the information while driving. Drivers are looking out of the windshield, but they do not really deal with the situation on the road.

Although the public appear to be turning against cell phone use while driving, many admit they regularly talk or text while driving. The police say that nine percent of the drivers at any given time are using cell phones, and about one in four car accidents are directly related to cell phone use.

Using cell phones while driving has becomea serious public health threat(威胁). A few states have passed laws making it unlawful to use a hand held cell phone while driving, but these laws give the false message that using a hand-free phone is safe.

What was the woman doing when the car accident happened?????

A.She was busy pressing buttons

B.She was talking on her cell phone

C.She was looking at the red light ahead

D.She was looking for something in the car

The word “vision” (paragraph 2) refers to the sense of .

A.taste

B.touch

C.hearing

D.sight

What is the percentage of the car accident caused by drivers using cell phones?A.9%

B.25%

C.45%

D.50%

What do we know about the laws making it unlawful to use a handheld cell phone while driving?A.They are not perfect

B.They are not necessary

C.They are not practical

D.They are not important

听力原文: Some years ago, an American policeman found a woman lying near a lonely road. She did not appear to have had an accident, but she was trembling and clearly in a state of shock. So he rushed her to the nearest hospital.

She began to tell the doctor on duty a story which was astonishing in all respects. She had been driving along a country road when she was stopped by a flying saucer landing in front of her. She had been forced to leave the car and enter into the flying saucer by some creatures. These creatures looked like human beings and could easily make themselves understood although they could not speak. It was as though they could read her thoughts. They treated her politely and allowed her to leave after carrying out a number of tests on her. As she otherwise seemed to be normal, the doctor decided that she was probably suffering from the side effects of some drug. The woman insisted on being allowed to go home, but when she gave her address, it was in a town over a thousand miles from the hospital.

The police then started to make inquiries. They soon discovered that there was already search going on for the woman whose husband had reported that she had disappeared, Her car had been found with the driver's door open and the engine running. In front of the car, the surface of the road had been completely destroyed, not by any explosion or anything of that kind, but as if a large circular white hot object had burnt through it.

(34)

A.She was driving along a country road.

B.She was lying near a lonely road, trembling.

C.She was lying in a hospital bed.

D.She was telling an astonishing story to a doctor.

Last summer my friend Mark and I motored a boat up the Illinois River, pulling ashore
for gas in the small town of Havana, Ill. We began walking to the distant station with our empty five-gallon cans when we passed three construction workers taking a break. "You fellows coming from the river?" one asked.

"You bet. Gotta gas up," Mark said.

We had only gone a few feet past them when one of them hollered (叫喊)."Hey, take my truck." Then he pointed to the vehicle at the curb and tossed us the keys. The man didn't even know our names.

We did borrow the truck. We got our gas, returned the vehicle and talked a few minutes with the owner. His name was Bill Parsley, and he was the sort of friendly, open man who would tell a couple of strangers to take his truck.

Take my truck. It became like a mantra (祷文)to us. It represented the world as it should be.

This past February, as Mark and his son were driving near their home in St. Louis, they came upon a van barely moving. The problem was an exhaust system dragging on the ground. Sparks were flying.

A young woman was at the wheel, and she had a baby in a car seat. Mark stopped and offered to follow her to a gas station to make sure she got there safely. Then he drove her to a nearby mall, where he picked up her waiting husband and son, and returned them all to the gas station. Bad news awaited them: the mechanic couldn't get the van fixed until morning.

The husband thanked Mark and said he'd call a taxi. My friend lives near the gas station. "Take my car," he said, handing over the keys. The man was taken aback. "Do you even know my name?" he asked.

"Actually, I don't," said Mark. "Just bring the car back tomorrow."

After a few protestations, the family climbed into the car and drove away. Less than an hour later the grateful man, followed by his wife in the family's other car, returned Mark's vehicle.

As Mark watched the couple drive off, he felt good. He turned to his wife, Carol and said, "We just paid Bill Parsley back."

A.one vehicle that day

A.Because they only had a nodding acquaintance with each other.

B.Because the man could not recall Mark's name.

D.Because the car was a real luxury.

5.What is the best title for the passage?()

Policeman James left the station just after 8:30 a. m. on Sunday July 5. He had spent a qu
iet night on duty and was looking forward to his rest day. As usual he took a short cut down the path behind Dugby Road and after a minute or two he saw a man climbing down a drain-pipe from an open bedroom window of Number 25. Silently James crept into the garden. The man reached the ground and was dusting himself down when he felt his arm gripped.

"It's 8:45 on a Sunday morning, " said the policeman, "and this sort of thing seems an unlikely adventure at such a time. Would you mind explaining?"

The man was obviously startled but kept calm immediately. He said, "I know what you're thinking, officer, but it isn't true. This is a very funny mistake. " "It's part of my job to take an interest in unusual events. I think you've just left this house in a manner other than the customary one. That may be quite innocent, but I'd like to make' sure. " James took out his notebook and a pen. "Name, address and occupation and then, please, tell me what happened. "

"Charlie Lewis, lorry driver, from Nottingham, 52 Brecon Street. My story. . . " "Yes. What were you doing like a fly on that wall, Mr. Lewis?" "Well, I had a breakdown yesterday and had to stay the night here. Bed and breakfast. The landlady's name is Mrs. Crane. She gave me breakfast at seven, and I was out of here in the right way and down at the lorry by half past. It was only when I felt around for a cigarette I found I'd left $ 90 in my pay envelope under the pillow here at Number 25. I always put it under my pillow at night. It's a habit I've got in to. I even do it at home. . . "

"I see. Why didn't you miss it when you went to pay Mrs. . . What's her name?" "I'd paid her last night. You've got to pay when you take the room, right? So I came rushing back, but it's Sunday, and she'd gone back to bed, and could I wake her? I rang the hell and banged on the front door for several minutes before I came round here to the back spotting, my bedroom window still open. Up I went, then, up this pipe. It's a trick I learnt in the army. She hadn't made the bed, and the money was still there. You know the rest, and I hope you believe it because

"Mr. Lewis, Whatever are you doing here? I thought you'd gone one hour and a half ago. " It was Mrs. Crane, speaking from the kitchen window at the comer of the house.

Why was James walking along that path?

A.He usually discovered something suspicious along that way.

B.He had an appointment with a man at Number 25, Dugby Road.

C.He chose to go that way by chance.

D.He knew he would get home quicker that way.

A young woman was driving through the lonely countryside. It was dark and raining. Suddenl
y she saw an old woman by the side of the road, holding her hand out as if she wanted a lift.

"I can't leave her out in this weather", the woman said to herself, so she stopped the car and opened the door.

"Do you want a lift?" she asked. The old woman nodded and climbed into the car. After a while, she said to the old woman, "Have you been waiting for a long time?" The old woman shook her head, "Strange", thought the young woman. She tried again. "Bad weather for the time of year", she said. The old woman nodded. No matter what the young woman said, the hitchhiker(搭便车的人) gave no answer except for a nod of the head or shrug(耸肩).

Then the young woman noticed the hitchhiker's hands, which were large and hairy. Suddenly she realized that the hitchhiker was actually a man. She stopped the car. "I can't see out of the rear-screen", she said. "Would you mind clearing it for me?"

The hitchhiker nodded and opened the door. As soon as the hitchhiker was out of the car, the terrified young woman raced off.

When she got to the next village she pulled up. She noticed that the hitchhiker had left his handbag behind. She picked it up and opened it. She gave a gasp(喘息)—inside the bag was a gun.

The woman stopped the car because ______.

A.the old woman asked her to

B.she recognized the old woman

C.she knew what the woman wanted

D.she wanted to help the old woman out in the bad weather
